Who: Lloyd Brennan
Education: Certified in Mental Health Nursing from Australian College of Mental Health Nurses
Do you know that if your mind is unwell, your body suffers too? That’s why your mental health is so important. Very often, people forget that illnesses of the mind are just as harmful as the ones that affect the body. Lloyd Brennan is an expert in taking care of people who are mentally ill.
A psychiatric nurse who was born and brought up in Australia, Lloyd started his career as an ambulance driver, but wanted to help people in a more direct way. So, he started working as a paramedic. The experience made him even more determined to change lives and learn about the illnesses of the mind.
Lloyd decided to focus on psychiatric wards and the patients who were admitted there. He has been in the mental health field for more than 40 years now! He first came to India because his friend, Dr. Naveen Chandra Shetty, was starting a mental hospital in Nitte, a village near Udupi. Lloyd came to help him set up the rehabilitation centre.
It was a major change for Lloyd who was used to Australian practises and standards. However, he quickly fell in love with India and began to understand our culture and ideas. Today, the hospital he helped found is very important part of that region. People come from far and wide to receive treatment and therapy there.
Lloyd is a believer in the power of rehabilitation and that it’s important to give mentally ill patients something to live for. Thanks to Lloyd and his team, many patients are able to leave the hospital and live full lives. Lloyd is a lifesaver in more ways than one!
