Who: Sunil Jain
Education: Chartered Accountancy course conducted by ICAI (The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India).
When Sunil Jain was 18 months old, he fell very ill. He had Polio, a disease that paralyses parts of your body. For many years afterwards, Sunil was treated for the after effects of this illness. Many surgeries later, Sunil was wheelchair bound but decided that he wanted to live his life to the fullest.
He started his career by doing a course conducted by the ICAI. Once he was a certified Chartered Accountant, he found himself doing well professionally. Sunil was also concerned for other persons with disabilities and if they were having trouble finding jobs in the field. Today, Sunil’s firm employs other persons with disabilities and gives them the opportunity to contribute.
Once his business was successful, Sunil found himself wondering whether he was completely happy. The answer was no. Sunil decided that he wanted to start an organisation that empowers disabled persons. He founded Astha, an NGO that tries to ensure that people with disabilities have the chance to find their passions and follow their dreams.
Sunil’s sharp accountancy skills and business savvy has helped grow Astha into the organisation that it is today. From sports to political awareness – Astha helps disabled people participate in many different ways. Sunil is a sports fan and loves playing games and supporting other athletes. Astha hosts an annual wheelchair tennis event and Sunil helps many para-athletes succeed.
Sunil says that he wants to live a life of complete participation and help others also do the same. We think he’s off to an amazing start!
