Growing up, Nipun Mehta dreamed of becoming one of two things. Either a tennis-pro or a Himalayan Yogi. But his path led him to study Computer Science and Philosophy at UC Berkeley. He started his career as a software engineer at Sun Microsystems in the Silicon Valley.
After a few years, Nipun founded ServiceSpace, a small project which focused on growth in generosity. It started as a mere experiment with three of his friends, but has now turned into something huge. This global ecosystem has more than 500,000 members today, and each of them have contributed to services worth millions of dollars, for free!
DailyGood, KindSpring, KarmaTube and KarmaKitchen are among the many projects undertaken. Nipun received the Unsung Hero of Compassion award by Dalai Lama, and he was recently appointed by President Obama on a council which aims at addressing poverty and inequality.
At a young age of 25, Nipun quit his job with only a 6-month survival plan. The year was 2001. Since then, he has continued to be a full-time volunteer. Today, Nipun and his wife, Guri, live in California and continue doing small acts with a big heart. His mission statement in life reads- “My life is an attempt to bring smiles in the world and silence in my heart.”
